Leader of DAMANT's Party.

His brothers John and Thomas also settled at the Cape. His sister Elizabeth was married to John ATHERSTONE of the same Party.

William DAMANT, single man, married Elizabeth CASTELL, single woman, by Licence on 23 June 1772 in St.Saviour, Norwich

Both signed their names.

Edward, son of William DAMANT and Elizabeth his wife (late Elizabeth CASTLE, spinster) was baptised 20 June 1786 Lammas with Little Hautbois, Norfolk

 

William DAMANT and Elizabeth CASTELL are both buried in St.Andrew's Church, Lamas, Norfolk (Parish of Lammas with Little Hautbois) and there is a plaque on the wall of the church which reads:

In the vault beneath are deposited the remaIns of
WILLIAM DAMANT
of this Parish
who died the 26th April 1808
Aged 65 Years.
Let me die the death of the Righteous and let my last end be like his.

Aged 43 Years.
Her conscientious discharge of the various duties of Life makes her loss sincerely regretted by all who knew her.

John ATHERSTONE married Elizabeth DAMANT on 13 December 1811 in St.James, Piccadilly (see notes for John ATHERSTONE)

 

Thomas DAMANT, brother of the settlers Edward and John, married Ann GRANT. In 1820 Thomas was already at the Cape but his daughter Ann Grant DAMANT was the 13 year old listed in The Settler Handbook.

 

Freedom of the City of London Admission Registers (Held at LMA):

This day Mr. Chamberlain having presented unto this Court William Castell DAMANT to be made free of this City as the Twenty eighth of Fifty granted unto him by this Court the eighth day of March 1803 to be applied towards the discharge of the Public Debts of this City. It is ordered that the same William Castell DAMANT be admitted to the freedom of this City by Redemption in the Company of Pattenmakers, paying unto Mr. Chamberlain for this City's use the sum of forty six shillings and eightpence

Beneath this the word Gent is scored out and replaced by Broker and ringed, to indicate current occupation
