WHITE Harry and Alice Donthorn Barker married 30 April 1883
Two large books were found in the cellar of a house in St John's Circle, Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZuluNatal, South Africa, which cellar was found when the wooden floors were being renovated. The books were covered in soot & slightly fire damaged. One was a photograph album with pictures of the Risley / White family in UK & S. Africa dating from about the mid 1850's onwards and the other book was Fletchers Family Devotions which contained inscriptions to Harry White from his parents & details of family marriages, births etc.
Apparently the original house on the site had burned down. We have not been able to find out when that happened but suspect it was about the turn of the last century, judging from the age and style of the rebuilt house on the site.
The books are now in the possession of Robert King of Everton, Natal, a descendant of the family.
These scans were taken and donated by Kathy Mauvis of Kloof, Natal. She did not provide a scan of the inscription mentioned above, or of the photograph album. The photographs inside the album do not seem to have had identifying names attached to them.
