Victoria Girls' High School magazine 1967/68 Obituary
Miss Marjorie COPELAND
It was with great regret that we learned of the death of Miss COPELAND who was for many years a Matron at Renfrew and Ruthville Hostels.
During her time at this school Miss COPELAND endeared herself to the girls because of her many worthwhile qualities. She tried to make the girls in her charge feel at home. Always cheerful, with a keen sense of duty, a kind heart and a quiet but firm sense of discipline, she managed the girls in her care with ease and they loved to be with her. She was a most worthwhile colleague, for nothing was too much trouble for Miss COPELAND and her cheerful sense of humour helped her to enrich not only her life but ours as well. To her relatives we express our most sincere sympathy. M G RICHARDSON (Principal)

The Crew of Puma 17
Shot down at Mapai, Mozambique 6 September 1979
With the complete withdrawal of Frelimo and ZANLA troops from the Mapai area, the local headmen decided to bury the bodies of the fallen men where they lay, and placed them in two large graves, next to each other.
These graves remained unmarked and unkept for thirty years, their whereabouts unknown to all but the local population, who treated the crash area with reverence and respect, and no-one ventured anywhere near the grave site.
y 12 April 2009, a small search party led by former RLI Lieutenant Rick van Malsen discovered the crash site of Puma 164, and the graves of the seventeen brave men who died there. These men were finally laid to rest by their comrades-inarms, with a short service, and the placing of a memorial cross on the larger of the two graves.
The Roll of Honour of the fallen men was read out, whilst the haunting sounds of The Last Post rang out over the silent African bush.

Spouse of Petrus Kilian van den Heever 1907 - 1982
We now know for sure that the two WRIGHT old people were buried in the Verkeerdevlei cemetery WITHOUT headstones. An elderly family member has confirmed that the family could not afford headstones when the couple both died in 1944, only days apart. I consider the headstone on their daughter's (BEZUIDENHOUT Carolina Embrensia nee WRIGHT 1902-1930) grave to be representative of her parents as well: Willem Lambert WRIGHT, * Prins Albert 2 Jan 1865 + Abt 13 Nov 1944; and Cornelia Christina BREYTENBACH * De Wetsdorp Abt 1861/64 + Abt 9 Nov 1944. Note that the father's name does appear at the botoom of the daughter's gravestone. The date mentioned there (1853) is a mystery.
