He emigrated as a single man, but his wife and children followed in 1826 with SHEPHERD's Party. William SHEPHERD's 1826 correspondence says that his wife was Jane (30) and the children were listed as Mary (16), Jane (14), John (13), Susannah (10) and William (8). Their address in 1826 was given as Chittlehampton, South Molton, Devon. Henry was the youngest son of James ADAMS and Ann CLARKE of Chittlehampton.

The names of these children do not match those found in SHEPHERD's corresondence, but Henry was listed as a mason in The Settler Handbook and Jane may well have had to move into the workhouse once Henry had left for the Cape.
