He is not listed in The Settler Handbook (M.D. Nash), but is listed in "The Roll of the British Settlers in South Africa" (E. Morse Jones) as emigrating "in the care of William SMITH". Family sources say he was apprenticed to William SMITH, who acted as a father to him. On the Settler Return he is listed as John SMITH (13)
Gravestone in Seven Fountains Methodist Church Cemetery says he was born on 16 August 1807 and that both parents came from England in 1820
