pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

July 30th 1819

Dear Sir,

We take the liberty of writing to you we hear you are in want of a number of men to go out to the Cape of Good Hope, there is four of us, George BRIGGS a blacksmith aged 29 wife 28 child 3 months. William FIELD blacksmith aged 26 wife 20 child is eight months old. George COLLIER a blacksmith aged 36 wife 29. John NICHOLS a hand in the stables aged 23. We shall all like to go very much to the Cape. Please Sir to direct to Mr. ARMATAGE Blacksmith, Vauxhall, South London
