pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

Sheffield, September 29th 1819

May it please your Lordship,

Having a great desire to go out as a settler to the Cape of Good Hope I have taken the liberty of addressing your Lordship to know wheather I can be allowd to go under Goverment on Nat [sic] as I have the number of men ready that is requird to be taken under my direction but I have been told it was too late as no more applycations would be receivd And if that should be the case I should be very thankful if your Lordship would be pleased to inform me wheather goverment would grant me the same quantity of land to those persons who might go out at there own expence as i have great desire to go and if I could have the land granted the same as those witch go under Government I could raise money sufficient to pay my passage with my wife & one child. I humbly hope your Lordship will be pleased to favour me with an answer as soon as convenient addressed to John CHARLTON at the Blue Bell, High Street, Sheffield you will greatly oblidge your Lordship's most obedient humble servant
