pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

Sir,

Having for the last six months been unable to find sufficient employment to keep me from a workhouse, I naturally turn my attention to a plan which His Majesty's Government have proposed for a number of individuals in a similar situation to myself. I have a good general knowledge of agriculture having been brought up in the country but for the last ten years have been used to Business in the City of London. It would be doing me a favour by informing me in which manner I am likely to be approved to go out to the Cape of Good Hope. Explanation and your information will much oblige
