pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

Sir,

After waiting upon you and gaining every necessary information concerning the emigration of settlers to the colony of the Cape of Good Hope I have procured ten able bodied men who are ready to embark under my direction as settlers to that colony. I have the means of maintaining of and providing for them whose names, ages, families & profession are inserted overleaf.

I am your very humble servant

Sir,

I am extremely sorry to have to trouble you with this, I should have waited with patience the result of that decision of which you promised to give me the early information in your letter of the 19th ult, but from the situation of my affairs I am obliged to crave your indulgence to have an early answer. I have a business to dispose of, find much money laying out in trade, so that the time there is from now to the time proposed for sailing is not more than sufficient. From the indulgence you have shown in quickly answering my letters I feel an assurance I shall still meet the same kind attention.

Mr. COCKBURN presents his compliments to Mr. GOULBURN. Mr. C. is very desirous of knowing whether the tender made by James HOOLE for myself and ten others is likely to be accepted – we were informed by Mr. GOULBURN's letter to Mr. HOOLE on the 10th inst that it was under consideration. Mr. C. is anxious for their success as he knows some of the party to be good industrious people & hopes Mr. GOULBURN will excuse his troubling him on the subject
