pre 1820 Settler Correspondence before emigration

ALL the 1819 correspondence from CO48/41 through CO48/46 has been transcribed whether or not the writers emigrated to the Cape. Those written by people who did become settlers, as listed in "The Settler Handbook" by M.D. Nash (Chameleon Press 1987), are labelled 1820 Settler and the names of actual settlers in the text appear in red.

My Lord,

I am directed to say there is a very respectable Protestant man who belongs to the Established Church and who is well conducted. His good abilities and firm attachment to His Majesty's Government can be certified by many very upright clergymen in this country.

He is desirous to take out with him one hundred loyal Protestant families (who possess a pretty good capital) to settle in His M's Colony at the Cape of Good Hope and to become their spiritual pastor.

If Your Lordship will be pleased to sanction his intentions he will on receipt of a reply to this make the necessary arrangements to fulfill the plan which His M's Government has [obscured] out relative to emigrants proceeding to the Cape.

He will engage to take out none but well conducted Protestants who are all firmly attached to the Established Church & the constitution. And he engages they will be always ready to take up arms in defence of their adopted country.

I also have to request Yr Lordship to state the sort of encouragement His Majesty's Government is disposed to give a religious teacher who wishes to go out as I have above mentioned.

I must here add that the person on whose account I wish this is not an ordained clergyman but his scripture & abilities are extensive. He had been long accustomed to instruct in a religious way but he never was of any other sect but that of the Church of England.
