Construction of the Dublin Custom House started in 1782 and it opened for business in November 1791. As the port of Dublin moved further downriver, the building's original use for collecting customs duties became obsolete, and it was used for local government. During the Irish War of Independence in 1921 it burnt down, and many historical documents were lost, making Irish genealogy a lot more difficult! The building was restored by the Irish Free State government.
