Friday 2 January 1863

DIED [date obscured] at the Wesleyan Mission Station, Emilie Eliza, the beloved daughter of the Rev. Arthur BRIGG, aged 1 year and four months.

DIED at Grahamstown on Thursday night the 25th December 1862, Fabian SOMOJE MD, of Peddie, Surgeon G.M. Settlers, in the 36th year of his age; his melancholy and untimely death is deeply and sincerely regretted by the whole of the inhabitants of the district; he was kind and affectionate to all without distinction, as a medical friend universally beloved and respected, he was always willing and ready to attend the poor and needy, a kind and liberal supporter to all religious and other institutions which tended to the welfare of mankind, and the division in general. His sterling worth and kindness of heart is the more to be regretted.

DIED in Grahamstown on Sunday 4th January 1863 at the residence of his son-in-law Mr. Chs. POULTON, Mr. Wm. MARSH Senr, aged 86 years 8 months and 12 days. Deceased came to this Colony with the British Settlers of 1820.

DIED at Port Elizabeth, the 4th inst, Edward Sidney, aged 11 months and 7 days, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace HUTCHONS of Dordrecht.

DIED at King William's Town on Sunday morning the 4th Jan'y, 1863, Matthew Ben, the beloved child of Matthew Ben and Annie SHAW, aged 1 year 4 months and 25 days.

DIED at Tylden on the 31st December 1862, William Ellis RANDALL, aged 30 years, deeply regretted by his family and friends.

DIED of consumption at Port Elizabeth on the 11th inst, Mr. Walter ROBINS, aged 25 years, son of Alfred ROBINS Esq, Southampton-street, London, England.

DIED at Cradock on the 8th January 1863, Kate, the beloved child of James and Mary Ann FARNHAM, aged 6 months and 24 days.

MARRIED at Commemoration Chapel on the 7th January by the Rev W. Impey, General Superintendent of Wesleyan Missions, Mr. John WALKER, third son of Mr. Joseph WALKER of Bathurst-street, Grahamstown, to Margaret Maria, only daughter of Mr. John ROBERTS of Oak Terrace. (No Cards)

DIED at King Williamstown on the 8th January 1863, James Cameron, only child of Mr. James McINTYRE, aged 4 months and 15 days.

DIED, at Kniehalter's Nek, Division of Albert, on Saturday morning 10th January 1863, Catherine Elizabeth Mary, widow of the late Mr. Thomas DOYLE, of Grahamstown, aged 74 years 2 months and 12 days. She died as she lived, a sincere Christian, with a faith full of hope and a hope full of immortality.

DIED at Sipton Manor Farm, near Fort Beaufort, on the 15th January 1863, after a few hours illness, in his 69th year, George Frederick STOKES Sen of Odi[h]am, Hampshire, and one of the British Settlers of 1820. Loved and honoured. Friends will please accept of this notice.

DIED at King Williamstown on the 6th inst, Matilda, 4th daughter of Samuel and Maria ELSE, of Grahamstown, aged 21 years and 4 months. Also on 22nd inst, at the same place, Jane, 2nd daughter of the above, aged 24 years and 5 months; deeply regretted by patents and friends.

DIED on the 26th instant, Bridget, the beloved wife of Richard WELLBELOVE Senr, of Grahamstown, born O'DONNELL, aged 59 years – deeply regretted. Friends at a distance please to take notice.

DIED at Port Alfred on the 26th January 1863, Caroline Sarah Louise, the only child of Dr. ARENHOLD, aged 1 year and 7 months.

DIED at Gretna on Sunday last, the 25th instant, by a stroke from lightning, Charles LINTON Esq of Gretna, in the division of Queenstown. Deeply regretted by a large circle of relatives and friends.

The bereaved parents and family of the late lamented Matilda and Jane ELSE are desirous of tendering their sincere thanks to those friends who so kindly rendered assistance to them in their absence from home on the melancholy occasion, and beg to assure them that the sympathy which tended to lessen their grief in this the dark hour of trouble will ever be remembered by them with feelings of the most profound gratitude.

DIED of croup at "Hartfel", near Somerset East, on the 30th Jan 1863, Anna Maria, daughter of George and Eliza HISCOCK, aged 2 years 9 months and 6 days.

DIED at Grahamstown, Feb 5th 1863, after a long and painful illness, Mary, the beloved wife of James GODDARD, aged 83 years. Deceased came to this Colony with her husband and family with the PIGOT Party in 1820. Friends at a distance will please accept this notice.

DEPARTED this Life at Alexandria on the morning of the 3rd February 1863, James Lloyd TILBURY Esq, in his 55th year, deeply regretted by his relatives and numerous friends.

DIED at Smithfield, Orange Free State, on the 28th January 1863, Thomas John CURRAN, eldest son of the late Capt. John CURRAN, of Capetown, aged 39 years and 10 months. Deeply regretted by his family and friends.

DIED at Cradock on 9th inst, Robert Sallows, the beloved son of Robert and Isabella HARE, aged 5 years and 4 days.

DIED at Uitenhage on the morning of the 21st February 1863, after an illness of 14 days, Mr. Isaac WIGGILL, in the 73rd year of his age. Deceased was one of the Settlers who came to the Colony in 1820. Friends and relatives will please accept of this notice.

DIED on Tuesday last, 3rd March, at her residence Howse Street, Grahamstown, Sophia, the beloved wife of Mr. Robert WEBB, in the 35th year of her age.

DIED on the 22nd Feb, at Fort Beaufort, Angelina, the beloved wife of Clarke MORRIS Esq, CM Rifles, aged 49. Friends will please accept this intimation.

DIED at Mr. J.F. NAUDÉ's farm, Springs, division of Peddie, on Sunday morning the 1st March 1863, Thomas Henry GRACE, in the 52nd year of his age, leaving a wife and son to regret their loss. Friends at a distance will please accept of this notice.

DIED at King William's Town on the 9th instant, age three months and two days, Mary Constance, infant daughter of Colonel J. ARMSTRONG, Cape Mounted Riflemen.

BIRTH on the 13th inst, at Grahamstown, the wife of W.J. STOKES Esq, HM War Department, of a son.

DIED at Hastings on Friday January 30th, Thomas NELSON Esq of Grahamstown, aged 77 years. During his short illness he was abundantly sustained by the religion of Jesus Christ, which he had experimentally known for more than half a century. He was one of the original Settlers, and senior Deacon of the Baptist Church, Hill-street.

DEPARTED this Life Mr. Charles HILL, at his residence, Long Rugge, after a severe illness of about eighteen months. He died perfectly resigned at 3:30am on the 24th inst in perfect peace. He was buried at Mr. James HILL's, Kareiga, on the 26th at 12 o'clock. Friends will please accept of this intimation.
