We regret to announce the death of Mrs. HODGSON, wife of Mr. E.E. HODGSON, of Cavisham, Nottingham Road, which occurred yesterday afternoon at 4.30.

Deceased was a very old colonist, and had been ill for a considerable time, having practically been an invalid for years. She leaves her husband and two sons, Mr. Richard HODGSON, Mountain Rise, and Mr. Bernard HODGSON, the Magistrate of Nongome, to mourn their loss.

The funeral will take place this afternoon at Cavisham.

MRS. T. CHAPMAN

News has been received by cable of the death in Cardiff, on February 25th, of Mrs. T. CHAPMAN, mother of the Rev. T. CHAPMAN, of the Baptist Church, and of the Rev. A.H. CHAPMAN, B.Sc., also a former Baptist Minister of this City.

Born in 1840, Mrs. CHAPMAN had reached the ripe age of 77 years, and this, seeing she had never enjoyed robust health, is a cause for much gratitude to God.

Four years ago a cable was received announcing the unexpected death of Mr. T. CHAPMAN. Owing to the kindness of the Church members, it was arranged for the Pastor and his family to visit the Homeland.

It is given to few mothers to supply a Church with two Pastors, as in this case. The ministry of the Rev. A.H. CHAPMAN, B.Sc., was highly appreciated, and that of his brother, the Rev. T. CHAPMAN, has extended into a period of nine years.

Mrs. CHAPMAN possessed an exceptionally Christian character, strong in faith, and calm in her spirit. Her memory will ever be honoured by her children as the one who lived for Christ, and through whose life and prayers they have also been led to follow and to serve Him as their Lord and Saviour.

REV. FATHER DE LACEY

The passing of the Rev. Father John DE LACEY, O.M.I. (briefly reported in the "Witness" yesterday), marks the closing of a career of great activity and usefulness in his Church.

He will be remembered with kindliest feelings by many old pupils as the founder of St. Charles' College, where the MARIST Brothers are today continuing the fine work which owes its inception to him.

Born of sturdy Tiperary stock, he came to South Africa as a deacon forty-nine years ago, and was ordained by Bishop JOLIVET.

In 1876 he laboured in Pretoria; thence he was transferred to Johannesburg in 1887, where he started the flourishing mission of to-day.

During the Boer War he was removed to Pretoria by the Dutch military authorities, and in "Pretoria from Within" (H.J. BATTS), the following mention of him is found:- "Father DE LACEY, of the Roman Catholic Church, managed to get out (to the camp at Watervall) more often, and on other days than Sundays.

He simply insisted on going, and more than once went out without a pass. He was able now and again to bluff the guards, in order to get in to minister the sick and dying.

His opportunities, however, were short-lived, but as long as he could he did grand service, though, to his horror, many Roman Catholics were allowed to died and be buried without the attendance of a clergyman, either during their dying moments or at the internments in the burial plot.

The (Dutch) Government committed the grave mistake of sending the eminent Father over the border. They saw it when too late, and wiring to Delagoa Bay, whither he had gone, offered him permission to return, which he declined."

He was the "Prefect Apostolique" of the Church, and the Father Superior of the Johannesburg Mission from 1897 to 1902, and laboured also at Pietersberg, Klerksdorp, and Potchefstroom.

Failing health compelled the relinquishment of his more active work, and about eighteen months ago he came to the Augustinian Convent in Estcourt. He was stricken down last Friday, and from Sunday was unconscious until the end came on Tuesday evening last, when, after great suffering, borne with fortitude and resignation, and closely clasping his beloved crucifix, he calmly passed away to "where, beyond these voices, there is peace."

The funeral obsequies were attended by all the Sisters of the Convent, with the pupils and staff of the school, and several residents of the town, and were conducted by Father SCHAVE, the Superior from Johannesburg, assisted by Father BOLD.

Beautiful floral tributes were sent from Mr. and Mrs. SOUFFERT and Philippe, Mrs. Edwin WOODS, Mr. and Mrs. F. HAMM, Mr. and Mrs. DRUMMOND, and Mr. and Mrs. PETTERVILLE.

The coffin was of solid oak, with silver fittings, and bore the inscription, "Father John DE LACEY, 72 years."

He was laid to rest in the lovely little cemetery of the Convent with every manifestation of sorrow and deep respect.

To his surviving sisters in Ireland the sympathy of all who knew and honoured their revered brother is extended in their loss.

MRS. J.J. HODSON

As already reported in the "Witness" on Friday last, one of our oldest colonists passed peacefully away on Thursday afternoon at Caversham - Mrs. HODSON, the wife of Mr. J.J. HODSON, J.P., of Caversham, Lidgetton. To very many the news will come as a great shock, for of her it may truly be said that she was beloved by all who knew her.

Her health for some time has not been good, and her advanced age - well into the eighties - made it clear lately that the end would not be far off.

It will be remembered that about two years ago he had pleasure in recording the celebration of the diamond wedding of Mr. and Mrs. HODSON. Of over fifty descendants, three only have pre-deceased them - the last being a grandson killed in Flanders, whose death we noted a few months ago.

Their eleven children are all living. Their eldest son is farming in the Free State, another in Rhodesia, and the remainder of the family is scattered about in various parts of Natal - one being Magistrate at Mpofana.

The funeral took place at Caversham on Friday afternoon, and was largely attended by relatives and friends.

To Mr. HODSON and the sorrowing children and grandchildren we beg to offer our sincere sympathy.

MR. PAUL WOLHUTER

We regret to announce the death, which occurred suddenly near Greytown on Saturday morning, of Mr. Paul WOLHUTER, an old and respected resident of the district.

Mr. WOLHUTER, who had reached the aged of 65, appeared to be in his customary good health and spirits when he retired on Friday night, but was found dead in his bed by his wife on Saturday morning.

The deceased was the fourth son of the late Mr. F.M. WOLHUTER, one of the original Voortrekkers, who, it is interesting to remember, was the owner of the site on which the present General Post Office in Maritzburg is situated.

The deceased leaves a wife and son, and his sister is Mrs. G. LAMOND, of this City. His son, Mr. Louis WOLHUTER, of the Resident Magistrate's Staff at Vryheid, left that town for Greytown immediately on hearing of his father's death, but unfortunately he missed the railway connection, and was compelled to remain in Maritzburg yesterday.

The remains were removed from the deceased's farm "Kleinfontein", to Greytown, and were buried from the Dutch Reformed Church yesterday afternoon.

OBITUARY

CAPTAIN RICHARD DYER, R.N.

LONDON, March 14.

The death is announced of Captain Richard DYER, R.N. (retired), who carried out the order from the Cape Government to annex Walfisch Bay.

Later he picked up the remnants of Stanley's expedition off the West Coast and conveyed them to Capetown and Zanzibar. - Reuter's Special Service.

DR. B.O. KELLNER

BLOEMFONTEIN, March 16.

The death occurred last evening of Dr. KELLNER, one of Bloemfontein's oldest residents.

He was born in Germany in 1836. He came to the Free State in 1863, and built up a large practice. He held many official positions under the Republican Government, and represented the towns of Fauresmith, Ladybrand and Hoopstad in the Volksraad for eleven years. Under the presidency of Mr. REITZ he founded the National Hospital of Bloemfontein, and was Mayor of the town for nearly ten years, and, with Sir John FRASER and Landdrost PAPENFUS, handed over the keys of the town to Lord ROBERTS on the latter's arrival in 1900.

He represented Bloemfontein at the Coronation of Kind Edward, and received the S.A. war medal for services rendered after the British occupation. He married Miss. O. EIRICH, of Graaff-Reinet, in 1865, and leaves a family of six sons and daughters. - Reuter.

REV. CANON H. SCOTT-HOLLAND

The death is announced of the Rev. Canon SCOTT HOLLAND. - Reuter's Special Service.

Deceased was an M.A., D.D. (Aberdeen), D. Litt. (Oxford); editor of "The Commonwealth"; Regius Professor of Divinity, Oxford, and Canon of Christ Church since 1910.

He was a son of George Henry and Hon. Charlotte D. HOLLAND, of Gayton Lodge, Wimbledon, was born at Ledbury, Herefordshire, in 1847, and educated at Eton and at Balliol College, Oxford.

He took a first class in the Final Schools in 1870, and in the same year was elected to a senior studentship at Christ Church.

He was ordained at Cuddesdon in 1872, and was afterwards Theological Tutor at Christ Church. He was Select Preacher at Oxford in 1882, and again in 1896, Proctor in 1882-83, and Censor of Christ Church in 1883. In 1882 he was appointed Canon of Truro and Examining Chaplain to the Bishop, and in 1884 was made Canon, afterwards Precentor at St. Paul's.

He has published several volumes of sermons, "Logic and Life," in 1882; "Good Friday at St. Paul's"; "Creed and Character," 1886; "Christ or Ecclesiastes," 1887; "On behalf of Belief," 1888; articles on "Justin Martyr" and on "Doctor Liddon" in the Dictionary of Christian Biography; an Essay in "Lux Mundi," "Pleas and Claims," 1893 "God's City"; and, in collaboration with Mr. W. ROCKSTRO, a "Life of Jenny LIND."

MR. W. H. SUTTLE.

We regret to report the death of Mr. W.H. SUTTLE, of 388, Burger Street, who was employed in the stationery department of Messrs. P. Davis and Sons, Ltd., of the City, for a very lengthy period.

In recent years he suffered much from ill-health, and on leaving this firm some months ago he was employed in the clerical department of the Natal Brewery.

The deceased, who was a Freemason, leaves a widow and a daughter to mourn their loss.

MR. WILLIAM CALDER.

LADYSMITH, March 23.

News was received by the last European mail of the death, in London, of Mr. William CALDER, at one time Head Master of the Maritzburg College, and afterwards of the Ladies' College, Edinburgh, Scotland. The late Mr. CALDER will doubtless be remembered by many of the older colonists of Natal, who will be interested to know that he lived the last few years of his life in London, and was highly respected by his friends as a man of fine sympathies and genial disposition.

MR. WALTER JOHN COLLINS

LADYSMITH, March 23.

On the 20th March, at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. Du CROIX, station foreman at Umbulwana, Mr. Walter John COLLINS passed away after having suffered from a lingering illness for some considerable time. Before coming to this district, the deceased resided for many years at Durban, where he was well known and respected. A large number of friends attended the funeral, which was conducted by the Rev. Chas. S. MILLS at the Ladysmith General Cemetery, the pallbearers being Messrs. D. WRIGHT, E. SMITHARD, C. BARTHOLOMEW, - De CROIX, MEYER and W. BAXTER.

A lovely lot of beautiful floral tributes were sent.

MR. NELSON WINCH.

LADYSMITH, March 23.

Enteric fever brought a bright young life to an end on Wednesday, 20th March, by the death of Nelson WINCH, at the early age of 18. The deceased was employed on the running staff of the S.A. Railways, and during his short life at Ladysmith had made himself very popular with all he met. The funeral, conducted by the Rev. Chas. S. MILLS, was attended by a large gathering of his fellow-workmen and many representatives of the I.O.G.T., of which he had been an active member. Many ladies were also present at the funeral.

The chief mourner was his brother-in-law, Mr. FRASER, from Harrismith, and the pallbearers were Messrs. J. QUALE, H. WEIR, J. MARAIS, E. SMITHARD, J. REID and C. BARTHOLMEW.

There were a number of beautiful wreaths sent, including tributes from Sister and Brother, Brother and Sister NEVE, D.S. Sister GOODBURN, DS., Mr. and Mrs. WEBB. MR. JAMES HOOPER

GREYTOWN, March 25.

The many friends of Mr. James HOOPER, or as he was more familiarly called "Jim," will learn with deep regret of his sudden death yesterday. It appears he was in his usual health, and had not yet risen, when he called to his wife that he was feeling faint, and on reaching his side, she found he had fainted. On recovering he fainted again, and shortly afterwards passed peacefully away, death being due to a clot of blood on the heart.

The funeral took place at Greytown yesterday afternoon, being largely attended.

Rev. E.W. COOMBE ptrformed the last sad rites, and the cortege was a large and representative one. The coffin was covered with beautiful floral tributes.

The deceased leaves a widow and four children to mourn their loss.

MRS. E. M. ATKINSON

The death took place at 514, Berg Street on Tuesday evening of Mrs. Edith Mary ATKINSON, wife of Mr. Henry ATKINSON, of the Corporation staff.

The chief mourners were the husband, two sons (Frank and Redvers) and three daughters (Mrs. F. WILLIAMS, Edith and Blanche); Frank WILLIAMS (son-in-law); Mrs. Dave Suttie (sister); Capt. HOLMES and Dave SUTTIE (brothers-in-law), and Mrs. Frank MILLIKEN (sister-in-law).

The deceased had been in Natal for over 37 years, and made many life-long friends. She was 48 years and 10 months of age. There were over 100 mourners, and the coffin was laden with wreaths at the graveside in the Roman Catholic cemetery, the service being conducted by the Rev. Father KELLY..
