OBITUARY

MR. J.M. ALLAN HAY

We deeply regret to record the death of Mr. J.M. ALLAN HAY of Maritzburg, which sad even took place at a Nursing Home in Durban on Monday night, 30th October.  He had a very serious breakdown in health about two years ago and although he rallied from this and several subsequent attacks, he never entirely regained his previous robust state of health. It was deemed advisable eventually for him to live at the sea level, and in March this year, he left his home “Glen Doune,” Alexandra Road, Maritzburg, for the South Coast, accompanied by his wife and daughter. During the seven months he was there an improvement in health was noted, particularly recently, when he was undergoing a new form of treatment.  However, his friends’ hopes of a cure were not to be realised as he suddenly collapsed on Thursday, the 19th of October, remaining unconscious, except for very brief intervals, until his death.  The passing was very peaceful, he simply slept away.
The late Mr. ALLAN HAY, who was the son of Capt. Alexander ALLAN HAY of Kirkcaldy, Fifeshire, Scotland, came to Natal over 30 years ago.  He became associated with Mr. Leonard LINE in the well-known stockbroking firms of Messrs LINE and HAY, of which he was managing partner and from which he retired 18 months ago, the partnership having lasted 26 years. He married Miss Helen KELLOCK of Kirkcaldy and had a son and daughter. His son, Edward, a subaltern in the Indian Army died of enteric at Mandi while on recurring duty in 1917. To his wife, who has nursed him devotedly throughout his illness, we offer our deepest sympathy and also to his only daughter, Dorothy, who grieves with her mother over the loss of one of the finest and most genuine of men.  A staunch friend, a devoted husband and father and a splendid business man, well-known for his uprightness and sterling character.
He was a Fellow of the Institute of Accountants in Natal, ex-Chairman of the Maritzburg Stock Exchange, and a Fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute. Although deeply interested in public affairs he took no active part in them, all his energies being concentrated on his business and in his home.
The funeral took place at the Prestbury Cemetery yesterday afternoon, the body being followed to the grave by a large number of friends of the deceased gentleman.  The service was conducted by the Rev. George GRIEVE, and among those present at the graveside were Mr. Leonard LINE.  Mr. W J O’BRIEN.  M.L.A., Mr. A J McGIBBON, M.E.C., Mr. J McAUSLIN, M.E.C., Mr. Percy JONES, Mr. Alfred LISTER, Mr P STRIDE, Mr. MUNRO, Mr. J T TAYLOR and many others.

OBITUARY

MR. DAVID WOOD

Mr. David WOOD, Assistant Park Curator, who was seized with a sudden illness immediately after addressing a meeting of the Debating Society on Thursday evening, passed away on Saturday afternoon at Grey’s Hospital.  Mr. WOOD’s seizure was totally unexpected, and from the time that he was struck down until his death he never recovered consciousness.
A native of Torquay, Devonshire, he came to this country some 25 years ago, and was for many years in charge of the gardens at King’s House, Durban, coming to Maritzburg to take up duty here about eight or 10 years back.  As a horticulturist the deceased gentleman had few equals, his aptitude for this work he inherited from his father, who was himself a horticulturist of note, and the author of several books on the subject.
A quiet unassuming man, Mr. WOOD was universally popular, whilst in him the Wesleyan Church loses a devoted worker, having been a lay preacher from his youth.  He leaves four sons and three daughters, Mrs. AVENSTRUP, Mrs. BEGGS and Mrs W ALLSOPP, whilst his wife died nine months ago.
Mr. WOOD was a valued member of the Maritzburg Parliamentary Debating Society, his ability as a speaker being very marked, and it was in addressing this body that he was struck down.  A very fine character, upright and honest to a degree, the community has suffered a severe loss in his sudden demise.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, proceeding to the cemetery after a service in the Wesleyan Church.  The Rev Eben GRIFFIN officiated and the body was followed to the grave by a large number of people, the chief mourners being Messrs Samuel and Joseph WOODS (sons), Mr ALLSOPP (son-in-law), Mr F C WOOD and T WOOD (nephews).  Others present included:  Mr W J O’BRIEN, M.L.A., Mr T G STRACHAN, M.L.A., Mr Jas McGIBBON, Mr FINLAYSON, Mr P T BADOCK, Mr Ronald WATTS, Mr ROGERS, Mr NAVA, Mr LINDSAY, Mr JOHNSTONE, Mr A E HARWIN, the Rev Mr ANGUS, Mr LINDUP, Mr THRASH and many others.
Wreaths were sent by Sam and Gwen;  Joe and Louie;  Roy (Benoni);  Fred and Jess;  Daisy and family;  Will and Elsie;  Evelyn and Dick;  Aunt Annie and Ken;  Maggie;  Tom, May;  Ben and Muriel (Pretoria); Ellie, Alof and Eric;  Mr. and Mrs. FRENCHMAN and family;  Maritzburg Horticultural Society;  Mr. and Mrs. D PODMORE and family;  Mr. and Mrs A B ASHTON and family;  Martizburg Parliamentary Debating Society; Mr D FORSYTH;  Mr and Mrs Walter REID;  Mr and Mrs C AMOS and family;  President and Members, East End Bowling Club;  Mr and Mrs W HARKER;  George Carter and Co;  The Mayor and Town Councillors; President and Members Camperdown Agricultural Society;  Mr and Mrs J C HAYCROFT;  President and Members, Wesleyan Methodist Local Preacher’s Society;  Mr and Mrs A DOWSETT;  W and J MacDONALD; Mr and Mrs A SAVILLE;  Town Clerk and Staff;  Minister and Preachers, Local Wesleyan Church;  Mr and Mrs A B GAVRENA;  Mr and Mrs J T DEVORNEIGE;  Mr and Mrs W J TONKIN and family;  Mrs WILLIAMS; Mr NEWBERRY and Employees of Park Department;  Mr and Mrs WILMOTT;  Mr and Mrs E Bruce BROWN.

MRS. HANNAH MILLIKEN

Many friends and relatives in Natal will regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Hannah MILLIKEN, which sad even took place at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. HOLMES, 250, Berg Street, Maritzburg, at midnight on Sunday last. Her death removed another old colonist who was loved and respected by many old friends and relatives.
The deceased lady was the widow of the late John MILLIKEN of the 58th Regiment, and subsequently a contractor at Zwartkop Valley.  She joined her husband in Natal during the Zulu War in 1881. Those left to mourn their loss are six children, three daughters and three sons:  Mrs. F.T. HOLMES, Mrs. Dave SUTTIE, Miss MILLIKEN, Messrs. Frank, Jim and Harry MILLIKEN.  Three daughters predeceased her, they being Mrs. Jack SUTTIE, Mrs H. ATKINSON and Mrs. Percy TAYLOR.
Owing to her health the latter part of her life was spent at Mooi River.  Her kind and loving form will be sadly missed by those dear and near to her.  Her sufferings, though great, were borne without complaint, her only thoughts being for those she was leaving behind. OBITUARY

MR. H.J. NANCE

It is with the deepest regret that we record the death of Mr. H.J. NANCE, the popular manager of the Maritzburg Rinko, which sad even took place in the Sanatorium yesterday morning. Mr. NANCE during his brief stay of a little over a year in the City had endeared himself to everyone by his courtesy and charm of manner, and his untimely passing at a comparatively early age will be regretted by a very wide circle of the public, to whose interests he was always attentive and considerate.
The deceased gentleman first arrived in South Africa some eighteen months ago, being stationed for a while at Port Elizabeth and afterwards in Durban, where he controlled the Empire Theatre.  From there he came on to Maritzburg, but his health had never been good, and last September he was compelled to lay down the reins of management, temporarily as everyone hoped.  Unfortunately he never recovered sufficiently to take any further active part and his condition gradually got worse until he succumbed.
Mr. NANCE was an Irishman and had been connected with matters theatrical all his life, being at one time on the legitimate stage and latterly manager of several large theatrical concerns in Ireland.  Normally he was a man of very powerful physique, but the influenza scourge of 1918 left him shattered in health, and it was on this account that he sought the warmer shores of Africa in the hope of regaining his constitution. This hope was unfortunately never realized, and though his health fluctuated and he sometimes appeared to be on the high road to recovery, his general condition gradually grew worse.
His familiar figure has been much missed at the Rinko of recent months, and the sympathy of the whole community will go out to his widow and little son in their irreparable and tragic loss. He was a member of the Roman Catholic congregation, and in addition to his wife and child in the City, leaves a mother in Ireland.  The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4.15.

The death occurred shortly after noon to-day at the Musgrave Nursing Home of Mr. Harry PULHAM, the well-known licensed victualler and race-horse owner.
