Documents of our French Huguenot ancestors in Europe
Finding information regarding our French Huguenot ancestors in Europe has always been a challenge. Most of the records were destroyed in the aftermath of the persecution of the protestants. During this time, many of the French protestants fled to the Netherlands, Belgium, and Flanders. The records for these protestants were preserved through the works of the Leiden Archives and are referred to as the "Bibliotheque Wallonne" collection. They cover the period of 1602 onwards and contains many of our own pioneer (Stamvader) details with some astonishing finds.
One example is the marriage record of our ancestor, Daniel NORTIER to Marie VITOUT in Middelburg, Zeeland on the 17th of June 1687. This was a mere 6 months before they set sail on the ship "Oosterland" for the Cape of Good Hope on 29 Jan 1688 on a 107-day journey to arrive in Table Bay on 15 May 1688.
